How To Enjoy Summer From Your Backyard

We may be stuck at home, but that doesn't mean we're stuck inside. Here are some great ways to enjoy the summer season right from your own backyard. Plus, I collaborated with some other bloggers for this post!


To start things off, of course, we have a good old fashioned barbecue. This is a great way to connect with family over some yummy food! You can even finish it up by using a fire pit and making some s'mores.

Outdoor Movie Theater

Grab a white sheet and a projector (or look up how to use your phone and some at home objects to make your own!). By hanging the sheet on a fence or between two chairs and setting up your projector on a table several feet away, you'll have your own movie theater! Add some towels or blankets and lots of pillows to make sure everyone's comfy - and don't forget the popcorn!

Tiki Bar

I walked into Dollar Tree the other day and saw that they had these super cute Tiki torches. I could see them making any backyard so beautiful! You could also decorate a folding table with some fake grass and bamboo as well as some tropical flowers! All together it would make for a beautiful place to whip up some cocktails or mocktails!


Another classic spring or summer activity is a picnic! I love going out and buying fresh fruit, a fun drink, and some sandwich materials. A picnic is a great way to make use of your backyard and a nice change of pace for lunch time.

Taking exercise outdoors during the spring is a great way to enjoy the out, and it still works even while social distancing! There’s so much you can do beyond going for a walk, jog, or bike ride (all of which being great ways to get some cardio in while avoiding others). If you find your neighborhood is busy while you go for walks, you can get a face shield that rests around your neck if you find a traditional cloth mask unbearable while running. Not into cardio? Head to your patio or front porch. Bring a yoga mat or some dumbbells and you have a new exercise space. You can even bring your laptop or tablet outside to do a guided workout. If you don’t have any outdoor space in your home that you can safely exercise on, find a room with a window that has your favorite view and you can still enjoy the beauty of spring while exercising.

Usually, during this time of year I would be starting my new summer job, but because I am immunocompromised due to my congenital heart defect, I am back to living with my parents.  I've been able to spend a lot more time with my seven years younger sister who is actually starting to be fun to hang out with!  More importantly, though, I've been focusing on a goal of mine that I've had for a long time.  In 2015, I started my blog just as something fun to do, but now I am actually working on building my brand and sharing my story of a college student with a congenital heart defect and anxiety.  I know to some people that might not seem interesting, but to me all of this extra time, while daunting, is super exciting because I now have time to focus on a goal/dream that I've had since I was a sophomore in high school (I just finished my junior year of college).  If you're struggling to find something to do, I definitely recommend writing.  Even if you don't upload it anywhere, just write.  You can go outside, or sit by the window and write about what you see.  Or write about your day from an ant's point of view.
